Young Italians seek pastures new

Young skilled Italians seek pastures new

A growing wave of technologists, researchers and entrepreneurs are leaving Italy. Faced with soaring unemployment and declining economic activity, young Italians are following previous generations in seeking their fortunes abroad, disillusioned by an economy in which graduates must often take menial jobs. Youth unemployment, at just below 37%, is the highest since records began 20 years ago.

And it’s not just the UK that is attractive to those looking to leave Italy for work – the UK is only the fifth largest European destination of emigrants after Germany, Switzerland, France and Belgium.

Over 44,000 Italians requested a UK National Insurance number last year – 66% higher than in 2012. Italians moving to the UK tend to be young and skilled – over 80% of people allocated a UK National Insurance number were aged 34 or younger.
