Truffle prices rise due to scarcity

A bad start for the truffle season: there are few available and at a high price. The white truffle stock market gave them on average at 35 euros per kilo and 45 euros for the most prestigious types, a peak price recorded only during bad harvests.

This is going to be one of the worst seasons ever because of the summer drought. However, the Truffles available are healthy dry and scented and the most famous truffle fair in Italy, the white truffle Fair in Alba, has already recorded only in its first weekend more than 10,000 participants.

If it rained only a little in the north, the situation was even worse in the centre and in the south.

Truffle prices could increase even more but rain is expected in November and this is likely to increase production.

The price peak is usually at Christmas especially in big cities. Last year in Rome and Milan the white truffle was valued at 600 euros per kilo.

Truffles are generally found in the regions of Piedmont, Lombardy Molise, Emilia Romagna, Tuscany, Umbria, Marche, Lazio, Campania, Calabria and Vento. Across these Italian regions, there are several white truffle fairs.

One truffle-based event to try in Tuscany is the San Miniato Truffle Fair, known as the La Sagra del Tartufo Bianco. Held in the beautiful medieval hill town of San Miniato in November, the event usually takes place over several weekends, most typically the last three weekends of the month.

Tuscany is home to around 25% of Italy’s white truffle produce so there will be plenty to go around and it’s the region to go to if you are new to truffles.   Other festivals in Tuscany include one held in San Giovanni d’Asso, near to Siena, on the second and third weekend of November. There is also a truffle museum open on the weekends. Another festival is held in the beautiful city of Volterra, from late October to early November.

In Le Marche the little town of Acqualagna, has named itself the ‘truffle capital’. The festival goes on from the end of October until mid-November.

In Umbria, Pietralunga holds the Mostra Mercato del Tartufo, the Trade Fair of Truffles, which begins in mid-October. If you miss that, you can always visit the Truffle and Forest Products Fair in November.
