NEWS » Repubblica Veneta?
Voting has begun on a referendum on whether Venice and its surrounding region should try to revert to being a sovereign republic.
Campaigners want a future state to be known as Repubblica Veneta. 3.8million people are eligible to vote but the result will not be binding on the government. It is thought that if there is a big majority in favour of reverting to a republic it is likely that steps will be taken by businesses to withhold taxes from Rome paying them instead to local authorities to try to force the issue.
Activists claim that the latest polls show that 65% of voters are in favour of cutting ties with Rome. Backhill will report on the results when declared.
