 Giuseppe Vignali Tournament 2011

The Annual memorial football tournament; named after the late Giuseppe “Joe” Vignali a well loved and prominent figure in the Italian community in London, took place over the May weekend of 21st and 22nd May 2011.

The teams that made up the tournament comprised of two Valtaro Wasteels teams, two sides from Italy; Borgotaro Calcio and ASD Valgotra, the holders Carnevale and the newly invited team Emigrante made up of AC Finchley  players - mainly second generation Italians.

The opening group matches produced a few shocks. Firstly Wasteels “B” under pressure for most of the game found a late equalizer to force their match against holders Carnevale to penalties. The penalty shoot out resembled Tolstoy’s best know novel as spot kicks rained in and/or  were saved, like for like, for a full 20 minutes before finally a key miss gave the Wasteels “B” team victory over their vaunted opponents.

Second game on and after a lively start Wasteels “A” were slowly pegged back and after conceding a goal from a free kick capitulated to the improving scratch Emigrante side.

The second Group One game saw a somewhat outclassed ASD Valgotra go down to Wasteels “B” team that were now ensured of a place in the final, with two wins.

The second Group Two game was an exciting affair. Borgotaro took the lead within 15 minutes and the Emigrante side had to dig deep to equalize before half time. Then the completion of a brilliant hat trick by Magwood and a goal by Timanti gave the score line a more comfortable look than looked likely for most of the game. So Emigrante were also through to the final.

The day after the Valceno Dinner & dance and the two Italian teams had obviously partied to the full. Borgotaro, tardy arrivals, were dispatched by Wasteels 2-0. Valgotra were even more easily disposed of in their final Group game by Carnevale 4-0. With little respite after this game Carnevale put up a valiant effort but Wasteels “A” proved the stronger side and ran out in the end comfortable winners to win the Third and Fourth place play off.

The final saw Emigrante take an early lead through Campbell; converting Rossi’s corner, but Wasteels “B” showed tremendous resilience and though outplayed for long periods ,persevered and  scrambled an equaliser to give themselves some hope. However an Alamo type siege on the Wasteels “B” goal ensued and tremendous heroics by the South London side denied the Emigrante side the winner and the match went to penalties. The Emigrante rattled off 4 conversions in a row against two misses from their opponents to ensure the North London invaders went home with the spoils.

Many thanks to John Sidoli and the Valtaro Committee for organizing the annual event, to all the sponsors particularly Carnevale, all the supporters that attended the matches and subsequent BBQ.  Special thanks from the winning team to Lou Sidoli for getting the players together from AC Finchley and for raising the sponsorship with Francesco Platoni and the Associazione Pellegrinesi.
